Evaluation of the tasks this year
a. Mind Map
The creation of the Mind Map was trivial for me. I think the connection between this years work were easy to find. This was a good practice for me, to think through the upcoming subjects and tests, and to practice diagram making.
b. 1-5 A discussion for each portfolio 1-5 detailing – and evidencing -:
Portfolio 1,
i. what you did well and why,
The writing of HTML and CSS codes was a good challenge for me, since I have not done anything like it before. I did not have any difficulties with this subject.
ii. what you struggled with and why,
Writing in English has caused me some difficulties. But I never considered it an important part of studying, so that was my first significant mistake I have made at the University. However I think that it is not the programmers work to write the text based content for a webpage. For example someone who sells medication researcher would be able to give an accurate and relevant description for a medicine, for this a programmer would be unsuitable.
I do not have experience in report writing, so I could not get the results I wanted.
iii. what you did in order to try to improve your understanding of the concepts you struggled with,
Since I did not have any problems with programming, I did not need extra support to complete these tasks.
iv. how well you feel you applied yourself at the time and what you learned from that.
After the first test, I expected to get better results. . I have lost a lot of points due to the work on an unspecified subject. Also I have lost some points due to subjective things which I do not fully agree with, for example Vertical and Horizontal navigation menu usage. This test helped me realise that the University has different expectations than what I thought.
Portfolio 2,
i. what you did well and why,
Writing a C# console program, usage of binary was very easy for me. Firstly I could write the program under the time that was given to me, which only had a few problems. With a half an hour of extra work I could fix all the problems and optimize the program.
ii. what you struggled with and why,
I had no difficulties with this task.
iii. what you did in order to try to improve your understanding of the concepts you struggled with,
I did not need anything.
iv. how well you feel you applied yourself at the time and what you learned from that.
When my work was graded, I had lost some points since the program did not display the right results, repeated usage and ease of use was also another issue. I do not agree with these results, since I thought that these parts were completely clear, but I might not have paid enough attention to the task as I felt it was easy. I do not like to complicate simple tasks, just so it will look like there was more work behind it.
Portfolio 3,
i. what you did well and why,
I think we did well, even if the part I worked on (Ipv6) we were not given much information on. I had to work on the full subject by myself, because I could not get any help from my teammates either.
ii. what you struggled with and why,
It caused a difficulty to finish a task on a completely unknown subject, which I have not worked on before, and as there were no feedbacks I do not know if the results were good or not.
The text presentation was not easy either, but the problems were also caused by not having enough experience on the subject and the lack of English.
iii. what you did in order to try to improve your understanding of the concepts you struggled with,
I have done everything I could to achieve a good result, but I can only do so much on my own. I know that I have put more time into the work, than the results show. I need more practice with oral presentations in English.
iv. how well you feel you applied yourself at the time and what you learned from that.
I do not know if I have gained any useful experience, the results do not tell me what would have been the right answer. This task was good at making me realise that the University has different views on what’s important and what I thought.
Portfolio 4,
i. what you did well and why,
I think this was the first biggest struggle I had with any tasks. I have put a lot of time and effort into it. I have included many extra functions, for example paging, customer registration, order search, password reminder and the business information page. I thought I could achieve extra points for this, as Andrew have mentioned on one of the lectures.
ii. what you struggled with and why,
When I got the subject, I first thought it would be an impossible task, but with about 200 hours of work, I could include all the functions that seemed important to me.
iii. what you did in order to try to improve your understanding of the concepts you struggled with,
I have done all the functions that were specified and I added a lot of extra ones, which took me a long time. Now that I know, how much of the years’ work it takes up, and how much of the overall results it affects, I feel that I should not have put so much time into it, as it feels like a lot of work for nothing. I have never gotten extra point for the extra functions, as it was told before.
iv. how well you feel you applied yourself at the time and what you learned from that.
I have not gotten the results yet, so I do not know what I did wrong and what I did well. I have realised, by spending enough time and effort into a work, I can do tasks that are seemingly impossible. I thought that creating a webpage like this would require much more work and experience.
Portfolio 5,
i. what you did well and why,
I think this was a good project. When we were told about the subject, I thought here too, that the given information is not sufficient with the size of the work. With a lot of time put into it, but I could reach my set goals.
ii. what you struggled with and why,
There was no particular difficulty about this, it required a lot of research and learning to finish the task. Flash was not easy for me, I have not used it before, and I was given a couple of weeks to learn and use a completely new thing sufficiently.
iii. what you did in order to try to improve your understanding of the concepts you struggled with,
A lot of time was put into my work.
iv. how well you feel you applied yourself at the time and what you learned from that.
I feel that this was one of the most useful portfolios for me, I feel like I have learned the most out of this so far, and I can use this knowledge in the upcoming years.
