Portfolio 6 Task

CET101 Fundamentals of Computing 2013/14

Portfolio Six: Reflective ePortfolio Upload

All of your portfolio work in CET101 is individual work.

This is largely a reflective portfolio which means that we want to see how deeply you are able to think about, make sense of, articulate i.e. describe sensibly to someone else, and be in a position to further build upon the knowledge and skills you have gained so far this year (you will build upon them not only in your mini project but also in levels 2 and 3).

Portfolios must, however, be evidence based. Therefore, the assessment is not only about your reflection but also requires you to upload the work that you have been amassing this year.

The knowledge and skills you have attempted to acquire and expand this year have been:

Knowledge

· Fundamental knowledge of the theoretical underpinnings of computer science

· Understanding of standards, formats and tools used in the design of information, multimedia and web-based systems

· Appraisal of the fundamental operation of computer systems, network architectures, hardware components, operating systems and associated protocols and data structures

· Recognition of the need for adaptable approaches to problem solving.

· Appreciation of the social, ethical, professional and legal issues associated with the development and use of computer based systems.

Skills

· Ability to specify and contextualize a problem and communicate effectively an appropriate solution to a range of audiences

· Use of software engineering techniques to design, code, test and evaluate a range of software solutions

Task

There are essentially three tasks: one is to keep your green learning record booklets updated all through the year so you can submit it for this assessment; another is to reflect on the year and create an ePortfolio site (using http://portfolio.sunderland.ac.uk) that encapsulates your own individual learning on the first year of your degree programme; the third task is to make some enhancements to 2 of your earlier portfolios – instructions are below.

The ePortfolio site should contain a minimum of:

1. A self-introduction (this was a task from weeks 1-2 ‘What is Computing?’)

2. Two skills audits - your original one completed in September and an updated one (completed in March/April)

3. Your UPDATED computing student Code of Conduct (your views on professional behaviour ought to have developed since September so this should be evident)

4. At least one answer to each of the 15 PDP questions that have been posed to you throughout the year (they are all in Sunspace).

· You may include more than one answer to a question if you feel that you can now provide further evidence from your experiences this year.

5. Your CV

6. Your ‘Mind Map’ which describes your learning this year and how, in your opinion, it has interconnected and made sense to you.

7. A collection of the CET101 tutorials you have completed during this year.

8. A written reflection on your performance during the year. This should be broken down in to separate sections that cover:

a. A discussion of the mind map.

b. A discussion for each portfolio 1-5 detailing – and evidencing -:

i. what you did well and why,

ii. what you struggled with and why,

iii. what you did in order to try to improve your understanding of the concepts you struggled with,

iv. how well you feel you applied yourself at the time and what you learned from that.

9. Two new pieces of work to enhance Portfolios 4 and 5:

a. For PF4 - a Heuristic Evaluation of the system

b. For PF5 - a Use Case Diagram for the system, and one detailed written Use Case (you choose which function this is for).

You may want to customise the standard ePortfolio site template to your own taste. A user guide is available at: https://wiki.mahara.org/index.php/User_Guide

What & How to Hand-in

You must submit 2 things, one virtual and one physical:

2. Also by Monday 28th April 5pm, your green learning record book must be submitted to the Assignment Services desk at St Peter’s Library.
